چکیده

800x600 unfortunately, at present, degenerative retinal diseases such as retinitis pigmentosa remains untreatable. patients with these conditions suffer progressive visual decline resulting from continuing loss of photoreceptor cells and outer nuclear layers. however, stem cell therapy is a promising approach to restore visual function in eyes with degenerative retinal diseases such as retinitis pigmentosa. animal studies have established that pluripotent stem cells when placed in the mouse retinitis pigmentosa models have the potential not only to survive, but also to differentiate, organize into and function as photoreceptor cells. furthermore, there is early evidence that these transplanted cells provide improved visual function. these groundbreaking studies provide proof of concept that stem cell therapy is a viable method of visual rehabilitation among eyes with retinitis pigmentosa. further studies are required to optimize these techniques in human application. this review focuses on stem cell therapy as a new approach for vision restitution in retinitis pigmentosa. normal 0 false false false en-us x-none ar-sa

Recent Advances of Stem Cell Therapy for Retinitis Pigmentosa

Retinitis pigmentosa (RP) is a group of inherited retinal disorders characterized by progressive loss of photoreceptors and eventually leads to retina degeneration and atrophy. Until now, the exact pathogenesis and etiology of this disease has not been clear, and many approaches for RP therapies have been carried out in animals and in clinical trials. In recent years, stem cell transplantation-...

Gene Therapy for Retinitis Pigmentosa

The retina comprises diverse differentiated neurons that have specific functions. Photoreceptor cells, the first-order neurons in the retina, have photopigments (rhodopsin and opsin) that absorb photons. Signals produced by the photoreceptor cells are transmitted to second-order neurons. Finally, visual signals are transmitted to the brain from the third-order neurons, the retinal ganglion cell...

Antioxidant therapy in retinitis pigmentosa

Increasing evidence suggests that oxidative stress contributes to the pathogenesis of many neurodegenerative disorders, including retinitis pigmentosa (RP), age related macular degeneration (AMD), glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy, and light damage. RP refers to a group of diseases in which a mutation results in death of rod photoreceptors followed by gradual death of cones. In this review we focu...
